GRAHAM ASHTON COMMISIONS CARLOS FRANZETTI

"Brasstango" will be scored for 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, bandoneon (Argentinian accordion) and double bass. Renowned Argentinian bandoneon player, Raul Jarena, will join GABE together with Timothy Cobb, Principal Double Bass with the Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera, New York. "Brasstango" will be recorded as part of GABE's upcoming recording "Landscapes" for Signum Records (London).

From symphonies to big band jazz, from chamber works to Latin American music and film scores – Carlos Franzetti has no limits. He is a multiple 2003 Grammy Nominee for “Poeta de Arrabal,” in the categories of Best Classical Crossover Album and Best Instrumental Arrangement. He is the recipient of the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Tango Album, “Tango Fatal,” and the 2002 New Jersey Council on the Arts Composers’ Fellowship Award. Collaborations with major orchestras have included the Boston Pops; the Brooklyn Philharmonic; the Buffalo Philharmonic; the National Symphony of Argentina; the Buenos Aires Philharmonic; the National Symphony (Washington, D.C.); the Czech National Symphony; the Modus Chamber Orchestra; the Janacek Philharmonic; the Bratislava Radio Orchestra; and orchestras in Mexico, Venezuela, Spain, Sweden, Norway and France. Mr. Franzetti has performed and recorded with many of the world’s greatest jazz, pop, and rock artists such as Robert Palmer, Gloria Gaynor, Chaka Khan, Ruben Blades, Arturo Sandoval, Mercedes Sosa, Soledad Bravo, David Sanchez, Terence Blanchard, Jane Monheit, Jon Faddis and Paquito D’Rivera. Major film producers and directors with whom Mr. Franzetti has collaborated include Sidney Lumet, Alan Pakula, Jerry Schatzberg, and Harry Belafonte. Film credits include “La Pelicula del Rey,” “Q&A,” “Misunderstood,” “Beat Street,” “The Mambo Kings,” “See You in the Morning,” and many others.

Carlos Franzetti’s “You Must Believe In Spring,” was released in May 2003. He conducted, arranged, and co-produced the 1997 Grammy Award-winning CD, “Portraits of Cuba” for Chesky Records featuring soloist Paquito D’Rivera. As Music Director of Orquesta Nova, Carlos Franzetti recorded 2 CDs for Chesky Records that received critical acclaim worldwide. Several of his orchestral works are included on “Images Before Dawn – Symphonic Music of Carlos Franzetti,” available on Premier Recordings. Recent world premieres and recordings of his compositions include his “Concierto del Plata” for guitar and chamber orchestra, released by Klavier Records. “Millenium Concerto for Flute and Orchestra” was commissioned by the Municipal Government of Buenos Aires, Argentina and was premiered in September 1999. “Corpus Evita, An Opera In Two Acts,” was recorded at Skywalker Studios and premiered in San Francisco in September 2000. His “Piano Concerto No. 2” was commissioned by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic as part of their 50th Anniversary season and received its world premiere in September, 1996 at the Teatro Colon. This concerto is included on a CD with his “Sinfonia No. 1,” released by Amapola Records. The “Sinfonia No. 1” received its world premiere performance with the Bratislava Radio Orchestra in November 2000 and will be performed by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic at the Teatro Colon in July 2003. Other projects include the 1999 Grammy Award Nominee, “Remembrances,” with Jon Faddis for Chesky Records; the 1999 Grammy Award Nominee, “Obsesion,” with David Sanchez for Sony Records, produced by Branford Marsalis; “Tango” with the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, released on DMP Records; and the 2002 Latin Grammy Nominee “Tango Bar” on Chesky Records. Upcoming releases include a CD with Steve Kuhn for ECM Records and another CD with David Sanchez for Sony Records.

Carlos Franzetti has received many outstanding grants and awards, including two gold records. Others include The Yamaha Composers Award; The Trofeu Laus from Barcelona, Spain; a Clio Award; The Prensario and ACE Awards from Argentina; The Foundation for New American Music; The Penfield Music Commission Project; several grants from Meet The Composer; and a Premio Konex.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Carlos Franzetti has lived in the United States since 1974, where his unique versatility has led to his successful career in all areas of music. Mr.Franzetti’s music is published by Pototo Music in New York.
